Electric Linear Actuator Specifications Explained
What the numbers mean
A product title rarely tells the whole story. The following specifications determine whether an actuator will fit, move safely, and survive the intended operating cycle.
Force
Force is the push or pull capacity. A hinged load may require more actuator force than its weight suggests because the mounting angle and lever arm change through the movement.
Stroke and length
Stroke is the travel of the rod. It is not the same as the total actuator length. Confirm both retracted and extended mounting dimensions before finalizing the design.
Speed and duty cycle
No-load speed is measured without the working load. Speed normally decreases under load. Duty cycle describes how much of each operating period the motor may run; frequent cycling requires checking the product data carefully.
Voltage, IP rating, and limit switch
12V and 24V systems need compatible power and controls. The IP rating describes protection against solids and water. A built-in limit switch can stop travel at the designed endpoints, but it is not a replacement for safe mechanical design.
Quick review
Compare force, loaded speed, stroke, mounting length, current draw, protection level, and control method together. Choosing from one number alone can create a poor fit.
